Today, U.S. Senators Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ) and Robert Menendez (D-NJ) announced that attorney Kevin McNulty has cleared the final hurdle to become a judge on the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey. The Senate approved McNulty's appointment this evening by a vote of 91-3

"I am confident that Mr. McNulty will be an outstanding addition to the U.S. District Court of New Jersey," Lautenberg said. "Mr. McNulty is an accomplished lawyer with decades of experience in public service and in the private sector. I am pleased the Senate has confirmed this qualified nominee, and we must continue working to fill the other vacancies on New Jersey's federal bench."

"Judge Kevin McNulty is eminently qualified and I am pleased that his nomination for a federal judgeship on the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey was approved tonight with overwhelming support from both sides of the aisle. I am confident his contributions to New Jersey's courts and rule of law will be invaluable and I am looking forward to seeing the positive influence of his work in our local communities," said Senator Menendez.

Kevin McNulty currently heads the appellate practice at Gibbons P.C. in Newark. Mr. McNulty spent more than a decade prosecuting criminal cases as an Assistant United States Attorney in New Jersey and served as Chief of the Appeals Division and Deputy Chief of the Criminal Division. Mr. McNulty served as a clerk to former U.S. Federal District Court Judge Frederick B. Lacey. He is a graduate of Yale University and New York University School of Law.

McNulty was approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee on April 19, 2012. The Judiciary Committee also cleared Magistrate Judge Michel Shipp for a seat on New Jersey's U.S. District Court bench, and his nomination awaits a vote in the full Senate.

In addition, Magistrate Judge Patty Shwartz of New Jersey has been approved by the Judiciary Committee for a judgeship on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. Her nomination has stalled in the Senate after Republicans announced their plan to block all votes on nominees to U.S. Circuit Courts until after the election.
